Boyhood - Linklater in focus
Richard Linklater’s opus magnum follows the life of an ordinary American boy over a twelve-year period. We see protagonist Ellar Coltrane literally growing up.
To commit yourself as an actor for twelve years to a director who has an exceptional project in mind, involves a certain amount of risk; a lot can change over such a long period. In this case, high risk was accompanied by high return: BOYHOOD turned out to be a masterpiece.
Filmed over a twelve-year period, Richard Linklater (BEFORE MIDNIGHT) captures in astonishing detail the boyhood years of Mason. When the film begins, Mason is six years old; twelve years later, he is a man. His experiences are similar to what a lot of others also go through: there are beautiful and sad moments in his life, parties and fights, loves and loneliness. BOYHOOD is not only about growing up, family life and finding your own identity, but also about the merciless passage of time. You see the actors age and change before your eyes, without artificial interventions. The result is a moving coming-of-age drama that gets under your skin: poignant, detailed, intimate, profound and heart-warming. (av)
