Zeevonk (10+)
Teen drama about a girl who, when she loses her father, goes to great lengths to prove that a mysterious beast has sunk his fishing boat.
There are rumours that the accident was her father’s fault but Lena is convinced that a mysterious sea creature haunts the North Sea, a monster that sunk the ship. Fighting her grief, she uses her imagination and courage to find the monster.
Director Domien Huyge lost his father as a teenager. He saw many films about mourning and loss, but those films were either extremely heavy or very far removed from the world of young viewers. With ZEEVONK, Huyge delivers a film that he himself would have loved to have seen as a teenager. The film takes young viewers seriously, but at the same time presents them with a story full of magic, excitement, adventure, humour, and friendship. Huyge: ‘No one understands that sometimes young people have to flee into something magical, like a (sea) monster, to cope with life. I hope those who leave the cinema can have a conversation about the loss of a loved one and how to cope with it. I want to tell that – no matter how dark life is sometimes – there will always be sea sparks’ (zeevonken).
