Paris, second half of the 17th century. Composer Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe is the grandmaster of the viola da gamba. After the death of his wife, he and his two daughters Madeleine and Toinette live in seclusion from the outside world. One day, Marin Marais, a young man who wants to take lessons from him, visits De Sainte-Colombe. After some hesitation, he accepts the boy, but their collaboration is not to last. Meanwhile, one of the composer’s daughters has secretly fallen in love with Marin.
This film gem about baroque music was beautifully shot by cinematographer Yves Angelo, who visualized the story like a series of tableaux vivants in the style of the French baroque painter Georges de la Tour.
