The Mill & The Cross
Lech Majewski translates Bruegel’s masterpiece The Procession To Calvary into cinema, mischievously inviting the viewer to live inside the aesthetic universe of the painting as we watch it being created.
In Bruegel’s controversial work, Christ, carrying his cross, makes his way to his own crucifixion. The painting, created in 1564, was a biting commentary on political matters of the day as well as a satiric view of religion. THE MILL AND THE CROSS re-creates the making of Bruegel’s masterpiece, as the artist stages the images and explains their meanings as we learn more about the individuals depicted and the people who posed for the work, many of whom have their own stories to tell.
