The Matrix (20th Anniversary)
Twenty years after the original release, the Wachowski’s classic sci-fi thriller returns to the big screen in a remastered version.
In THE MATRIX, computer hacker Neo is approached by a group of cyber rebels trying to convince him that the world in which he lives is a simulated one, created by intelligent machines that want to restrain humanity. Neo is seen as ‘the chosen one’, it is up to him to crack the ‘Matrix’ and help humanity return to the real world.
THE MATRIX rewrote the laws of the blockbuster and proved that words such as ‘philosophical’ and ‘layered’ can be aligned with commercial success. Twenty years after its original release, the theme of the film – the dangers of artificial intelligence – is perhaps even more topical than at the time. Perhaps even more remarkable, the martial arts scenes and the stunts are also just as breath-taking as they were back then.
THE MATRIX won four Oscars in technical categories in 2000 and is in the top 20 best films of all time on the popular film website IMDb. The scene in which Neo has to choose between a red and a blue pill is now one of the classic scenes in film history. The Wachowski brothers – who have both undergone a sex change and are now the Wachowski sisters – made two sequels, but were never able to match the artistic success of the first film.
