Bruno feels abandoned after his brother Damir’s suicide attempt. Looking for help, he and his brother encounter nothing but bureaucracy at the police. There is also little empathy to be found at care organisations. Bruno then decides to move his brother to their parental home in Split, but this soon proves to be a disastrous choice.
For his debut film SAFE PLACE, director Jurac Lerotić draws on his own painful family history. In raw and carefully composed images, he criticizes the authorities in his homeland that did not pay attention to his brother's mental health crisis. Lerotić not only directs the film, but also wrote the screenplay and plays the lead role. At the Locarno International Film Festival, the film was awarded three prizes, including those for best debut film and best actor (Goran Markovic).
