Rebels of the Neon God
Tsai Ming-liang’s first feature film is both a loving portrait of the city of Taipei and a film about a confused friendship between two youngsters growing up in the Taiwanese capital.
Please note that this film is in Mandarin, with Dutch subtitles.
Taipei, the early 1990s. The economies of Southeast Asia are booming, but this hardly seems to interest the young protagonists of REBELS OF THE NEON GOD. They hang around, without any goals or ambitions. Tsai Ming-liang’s debut is an occasionally ironic sketch of a friendship between two boys in a metropolis. Motorbikes, video games, girls and sex are the ingredients of this film, underscored by atmospheric guitar music.
Tsai Ming-liang, Taiwan, 1992, 107 min. Mandarin & Minnanyu spoken, Dutch subtitles.
With Chen Chao-jung, Jen Chang-Bin, Lee Kang-sheng, Lu Yi-Ching, Tien Miao.
