Oppenheimer
Epic thriller from Christopher Nolan (Inception, Dunkirk) with Cillian Murphy in the role of the ‘father of the atomic bomb’: the enigmatic physicist Robert Oppenheimer. With a whopping seven Oscars, including the award for Best Picture, the big winner of the Academy Awards.
Prometheus was punished by the gods for giving fire to man. In OPPENHEIMER, Christopher Nolan tells the life story of the man dubbed the American Prometheus: J. Robert Oppenheimer. During World War II, the United States – fearing developments in Nazi Germany – was working on the world’s first nuclear weapon. A team of scientists and military personnel led by Oppenheimer was tasked with exploring the potential of uranium as a weapon. The resulting atomic bomb – designed with the good intention to end World War II – was eventually used in the air strikes on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
OPPENHEIMER – which was shot with IMAX cameras to stunning effect – is based on the book AMERICAN PROMETHEUS: THE TRIUMPH AND TRAGEDY OF J. ROBERT OPPENHEIMER, which won Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin the Pulitzer Prize. The lead role is played by Cillian Murphy (PEAKY BLINDERS). The film marks the end of the long-standing collaboration between Christopher Nolan and US film studio Warner Bros. Nolan decided to leave for rival Universal out of dissatisfaction with Warner’s plan to release OPPENHEIMER simultaneously in cinemas and on streaming service HBO Max. As such, it is a film Nolan wants you to see on a big screen. (mv)
