Hokwerda's kind
Psychological drama about a long-distance swimmer who gets sucked into a passionate but also cruel affair with an underwater welder. Directed by Boudewijn Koole (Kauwboy), based on the book of the same name by Oek de Jong.
33-year-old Lin is a successful swimmer. After a career in competitive swimming, she now seeks a challenge in open water. For the past few years, she has been training for a gruelling swim across the Channel. The fact that swimmers sometimes disappear during this crossing attracts rather than scares Lin. As a little girl, she asked her father to throw her over the reeds in the canal. Time after time, he threw her. Until once she almost drowned.
A few weeks before her crossing, she meets Henri, a deep-sea welder, who, like her, thrives on danger. Lin and Henri begin an intense love affair. They challenge each other, forgetting that even lovers can drown.
HOKWERDA'S KIND is a film adaptation of Oek de Jong’s 2002 bestselling novel, which was nominated for two of the most prestigious literary awards in the Netherlands and Belgium. The book has already been successfully adapted for the stage by Madeleine Matzer. Oek de Jong is enthusiastic about the choice of Boudewijn Koole as director of the film adaptation: ‘He will take this story to a new audience.’
