Habemus Papam
Crisis management in the Vatican: for Nanni Moretti (La Stanza Del Figlio) a nice starting point for a remarkably mild comedy about the ups and downs of the Catholic Church.
HABEMUS PAPAM opens with the election of a new pope. White smoke has already curled from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel when it appears that the new Pope – played by Michel Piccoli – is completely paralyzed by the pressure and does not dare to speak to his followers. Soon, the official Vatican spokesman is working overtime to handle the public relations crisis. Behind the scenes, a psychoanalyst – an atheist, of course – is hired to boost the new Pope’s confidence and investigate whether he is mentally stable enough to lead the Catholic Church.
