Samuele is twelve. Like all boys of his age he does not always enjoy going to school. He would much rather play with his slingshot. But his home island Lampedusa is not like other islands. This tiny speck of an island has become the face of the refugee crisis. Hundreds of thousands of emigrants head for Lampedusa longing for peace and freedom and yet so often only their dead bodies are pulled out of the water. Thus, every day the inhabitants of Lampedusa are bearing witness to the greatest humanitarian tragedy of our times.

Gianfranco Rosi’s observations of everyday life bring us closer to this place that is as real as it is symbolic.

After the screening there will be a conversation with Rasha Fakkas. She was born in Aleppo, Syria, graduated in English language and literature, but fled the country in 2015. In the Netherlands she studied Dutch. Currently she is working. Unicef Students' Roman Massion will moderate this discussion.

Gianfranco Rosi, Italy, France, 2016, 108 min. Italian & English spoken, English subtitles.
