Tortured by the loss of a son he encouraged to enlist in the armed forces, a church minister and ex-military chaplain struggles with his faith when a pregnant woman and her radical environmentalist husband come to him for counselling. The couple is conflicted about bringing a child into the world. They reach out to the minister for advice and comfort. Reeling from both the loss of his own child and a chain of unexpected events, the clergyman finds his faith tested.
In FIRST REFORMED, Paul Schrader returns to a subject he knows so well: the religion of his childhood, the strict Calvinist Christian Reformed Church. Directing with consummate control and simplicity, Schrader has composed a film of classic rigour and stately grace, where undercurrents of uncontrollable emotions threaten to break apart an orderly life.
