Close
Tender and touching coming-of-age drama by Lukas Dhont (Girl) about two inseparable friends who are driven apart by a seemingly innocent event.
Lukas Dhont follows up his award-winning debut GIRL with a delicate story about the close friendship between two thirteen-year-old boys. We get to know Léo and Rémi on a summer’s day in the Belgian countryside: bathing in golden light, they race their cycles through the flower fields. But then a new school year begins. When a few classmates make joking remarks about their close friendship, it causes uncertainty, especially for Léo.
In his debut film GIRL (2018), about a young transgender ballerina, Lukas Dhont delivered an impressive calling card. Its successor CLOSE is just as hypnotically beautiful, intimate and moving. It is a sensuous, lyrical film that draws you into the fragile world of insecure teenage boys, with incredibly naturalistic acting by a very young cast. The film had its world premiere at the Festival de Cannes, where it was awarded the Grand Prize of the Jury.
