Veteran Argentine actor Ricardo Darín plays Julio César Strassera, real-life lead prosecutor in the nation’s historic Trial of the Juntas. Amidst death threats and the long shadow cast by Argentina’s collapsed military dictatorship, Strassera and his young legal team try nine commanders for crimes against humanity, including torture, kidnapping, murder, and the disappearance of tens of thousands of citizens during the Dirty War. It was the world’s first major war crimes trial since Nuremberg, and through courtroom testimony – adapted from original records – director Santiago Mitre shows the heavy toll of the last junta.

With great skill, filmmaker Santiago Mitre instills this courtroom drama with light-heartedness and even humour, without ever losing sight of the seriousness of the subject. This achievement has not gone unrecognized. ARGENTINA, 1985 already won the award for best non-English language film at the Golden Globes earlier this year and in the upcoming Oscar ceremony the film is competing for the award for Best International Film.

Santiago Mitre, Argentina, UK, USA, 2022, 140 min. Spanish & English spoken, English subtitles. With Ricardo Darín, Gina Mastronicola, Francisco Bertín, Santiago Armas Estevarena, Alejandra Flechner.
