The main character of AFTER LOVE is Mary Hussain, who is in her early sixties. Mary once converted to Islam to be able to marry her great love, ferry captain Ahmed. For years they led a contented life together on the British coast, until Ahmed suddenly suffered a fatal heart attack. Going through Ahmed’s papers, Mary is in for another shock: in his wallet she finds a photograph of a woman. Mary travels to Calais to seek redress, but the meeting with the other woman takes an unexpected turn.

AFTER LOVE has something of a thriller but is also a fascinating portrait of two contrasting women’s lives and a marriage based on cultural assimilation. The film premiered during the Critics’ Week in Cannes and received four BAFTA nominations.
