A Perfectly Normal Family

Danish drama about a young girl whose world is turned upside down when her father tells her that he wants to transition to female.
Time & Tickets

11-year-old Emma comes from a perfectly normal Danish family. There’s dad, there’s mom, and there are two daughters. Until, one day, her father says he wants to live the rest of his life as a woman. Thomas makes a rapid transition into Agnete: a woman in stylish dresses who suddenly has no more interest in football. As Thomas becomes Agnete, both father and daughter struggle to hold on to what they had while accepting everything has changed.

A first-time feature maker, Malou Reymann herself gew up with a father who became a woman. Like no other, she knows how to tell this intimate, delicate, heartbreaking story without any sensationalism. It is not without reason that Reymann won the VPRO Big Screen Award at the IFFR 2020 for this film.

Malou Reymann, Denemark, 2020, 97 min. Danish spoken, Dutch subtitles. With Jessica Dinnage, Mikkel Boe Følsgaard, Hadewich Minis.
