WEST SIDE STORY might be one of the most famous musicals: the story of Shakespeare’s ROMEO AND JULIET, relocated to Manhattan, New York. There, in the Upper West Side, the Jets face the Sharks – youngsters from Puerto Rico. Naturally, Jets member Tony becomes infatuated with Maria, the younger sister of Sharks leader Bernardo. Their love is put to the ultimate test.

The 1961 film version starring Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer was awarded ten Oscars. So it takes some nerve to make a remake in 2021 – even if your name is Steven Spielberg. However, if we are to believe the musical legend and lyricist of the original musical Steven Sondheim, Spielberg has succeeded: ‘It's really terrific!’

Ariana DeBose is the first black, openly queer woman to win the Oscar for best female supporting actor.

Steven Spielberg, USA, 2021, 156 min. English & Spanish spoken, Dutch subtitles. With Ansel Elgort, Rachel Zegler.
