Set in the scorching heat of a Spanish summer, the film follows Rose, a bitter and cynical woman in her sixties who uses a wheelchair, and her daughter Sofia, a failed anthropology student in her twenties, as they travel to the seaside town of Almería to consult Gómez, an enigmatic healer who may hold the key to Rose’s mysterious illness. But in the sun-drenched town, Sofia, trapped until now by her mother’s condition, begins to shed her inhibitions as she is drawn to the magnetic charms of a – seemingly – free-spirited traveller, Ingrid.

Hot Milk is the directorial debut of award-winning writer Rebecca Lenkiewicz, who previously wrote the screenplays for Ida, Disobedience and She Said. In these films, women resist oppression in closed worlds, namely communist Poland, the Orthodox Jewish community and male-dominated Hollywood. Hot Milk presents a new variation on this theme: three women trapped in their own minds and self-imposed or imposed limitations.

Rebecca Lenkiewicz, United Kingdom, 2025, 93 min. English spoken, Dutch subtitles. With Emma Mackey, Fiona Shaw, Vicky Krieps, Vincent Perez.
