Inspiring and intimate documentary about Biniam Girmay, the first African winner of a cycling classic.
For more than six years, director Lieven Corthouts followed – as a director as well as a friend – professional cyclist Biniam Girmay from Eritrea. We first see him when he is only seventeen years old and a promising cycling talent. His big dream is to compete in the Tour de France. We follow Girmay during his first major African tours and his first steps in European professional teams. The hardships are countless. To begin with, there are the many visa procedures; Europe is reluctant to grant Biniam entry. In addition, Girmay has difficulties getting used to the northern European climate. When he marries in Eritrea and becomes a father, the distance of 6,000 kilometres from his homeland also takes its toll. Despite all the setbacks, Biniam is climbing up the international rankings. When he wins the classic cycling race Gent-Wevelgem in 2022, he becomes a cycling hero overnight.
