The Surfer
A pleasantly deranged pulp movie in which Nicolas Cage has a go at a violent Australian gang of surfers. A cult classic in the making.
An unnamed man returns with his son to the idyllic beach of his childhood. It turns out that he is not welcome in what used to be his home. He is confronted by thugs who insist the beach is for ‘locals only.’ It soon becomes clear that the coast area has been taken over by a violent surf cult led by a wealthy businessman who preaches toxic masculine ideology while presiding over drug-fuelled parties and violent hazing rituals. The unnamed man gets drawn into a conflict that rises with the punishing heat of the summer.
When Cage refuses to give up his claim to the beach, he is sucked into the cult’s web of madness, with increasingly unhinged results - while a number of flashbacks portray his horrible past. A gleefully deranged midnight film and a must for lovers of trademark ‘Cage rage’.
