This masterpiece of the Indian New Wave was recently restored using the original camera and sound negatives. This family saga about female self-denial is set in the period just after the partition of Bengal into a Pakistani and an Indian part. Neeta is the eldest daughter in a family of refugees and must look after everyone: her demented father, her embittered mother, her cunning, greedy sister, her artistic brother and a younger brother and sister who have been hospitalized. Even as Neeta gets visibly sicker, her parents and siblings keep demanding more and more, squeezing the last bit of life out of Neeta.
