After THE HUMAN VOICE (2020) with Tilda Swinton, Spanish great Pedro Almodóvar (DOLOR Y GLORIA, TODO SOBRE MI MADRE, HABLE CON ELLA) delivers another short film. In STRANGE WAY OF LIFE, childhood friends Silva and Jake meet again for the first time after twenty-five years. Pedro Pascal (GAME OF THRONES, THE LAST OF US) plays Silva, a handsome Mexican cowboy who rides his horse into the town of Bitter Creek at the beginning of the film. He has come here to meet his childhood friend, sheriff Jake, played by Ethan Hawke. After a dinner where Jake drinks wine for the first time in years, the men’s mutual feelings become too intense to resist. However, the relationship between them is complicated by the fact that Jake is on the hunt for Silva’s son, whom he suspects of murder.

Almodóvar’s lusty and somewhat kinky answer to BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN is the first production of Saint Laurent Productions, a new film production company of French luxury fashion house Saint Laurent. The combination of Almodóvar with Saint Laurent produces something we have never seen in a western before: a sheriff with a fine collection of, carefully folded, linen underwear. Too bad John Wayne didn’t live to see it. (mv)
