She They Us (ep.1: Acceptance + ep.5: Safety) - English subtitled
Special screening of two episodes from the Belgian documentary series She They Us, portraying people who, inspired by intersectional feminism, are fighting for a future where everyone can be equal.
ACCEPTANCE follows top international model Hanne Gaby Odiele. At the age of 17, Hanne discovers while reading a teen magazine that they are intersex. Only then does they understand the reason for the surgeries during her childhood. Today, they use their status as a top model to stop cosmetic surgeries on intersex children. Charlotte Adigéry is a Belgian singer with Caribbean roots. On the verge of her big breakthrough, she is trying to come to terms with racial trauma. For Charlotte and Hanne, it seems as if the world cannot accept them as they are.
In SAFETY, we meet Eefje Depoorter, a Belgian journalist reporting on e-sports tournaments around the computer game League of Legends. Like so many other women in the gaming industry, she is confronted with hate speech online on a daily basis. Fatima-Zohra Ait El Maâti brings together Muslim girls in Brussels to share their concerns and problems: physical violence at home or on the street, sexist comments and direct death threats. Together, they build a safe space for their community.
Intersectionality recognises that everyone experiences their own unique form of discrimination or oppression, involving not only gender but also ethnicity, class and religion. The SHE THEY US series was therefore not made from the perspective of one director, but by a diverse film team and in close collaboration with those portrayed.
This programme is a collaboration with Studium Generale. After the screening of the two episodes of SHE THEY US, there will be a Q&A with Zaïde Bil, one of the directors.
