At the end of the nineteenth century, Lasse, and his son Pelle, like many other migrants, leave Sweden by boat for the Danish island of Bornholm. They want to build a new life there, but things don’t go as smoothly as they imagined. Lasse finds work at a large farm but is treated inhumanely and even though Pelle learns Danish he still doesn’t fit in. However, their dream of a better life never dies.

PELLE THE CONQUEROR was the big international breakthrough for Danish director Bille August. He won both the Golden Palm and the Oscar for best non-English language film. Star actor Max von Sydow definitely carries the film. He is unsurpassed at the difficult challenge of appearing not to act, of appearing to be a simple and true man even in scenes of great complexity.

Bille August, Sweden, 1987, 157 min. Finnish, Danish & Swedish spoken, English subtitles. With Pelle Hvenegaard, Max von Sydow, Erik Paaske.
