Open Air | O Brother, Where Art Thou? (Sold out)
Grotesque musical comedy from the Coen brothers about three escaped prisoners who embark on an odyssey through the southern United States of the thirties.
In true Coens fashion, this ferocious comedy, filmed on widescreen, is full of colorful characters. There's Ulysses Everett McGill for example, played by George Clooney. He's the extremely vain yet intelligent leader among the three fugitives. While the three of them try to recover the hidden loot from a bank robbery, they are being pursued by a ruthless policeman. Along the way, every encounter is a delightful nod to Homer's classic work: from the blind prophet to the purification of sin, and from the Cyclops to the seduction of the Sirens. But all of this dipped in a tasty Coens sauce.
A core element of this disarming, summery movie is the soundtrack, full of bluegrass, gospel and country. Renowned songwriter T-Bone Burnett helped put together the songs - a combination of vintage country blues with originals in the same style - while Carter Burwell composed the background music. The three travelers themselves also recorded a single at a music studio they happened to pass by, the brilliant song I AM A MAN OF CONSTANT SORROW. The song went on to become a hit and so did this modern Coens’ classic.
