With only their voices they call Muslims to prayer several times a day: the muezzins. Since the time of the prophet Muhammad, religious Muslims have responded to the muezzin’s call for prayer five times a day. A more recent phenomenon is the Turkish muezzin competitions. Every year the very best muezzins of the country compete against each other. MUEZZIN follows the dramatic progress of competition and investigates the phenomenon of individuality within Islamic culture. In a world where Islam is all too often portrayed as bleak and unchangeable, this film presents the lighter side of one of the world’s largest religions.
