Soon after robbing a casino with his mate Jigen, master thief Lupin the Third, grandson of the renowned Arsène Lupin, discovers that the loot consists of counterfeit money. It appears to have come from the islet of Cagliostro. Once there, Clarisse, the princess of Cagliostro, turns out to be pursued by her cousin who wants to force her into marriage. He is looking for treasure on the island and can only find it with the help of a ring belonging to the princess. Lupin decides to rescue her. This results in great chase scenes and action, with Lupin getting help from his allies Fujiko and Goemon, and an inspector who, however, also wants to cuff him.

All the hallmarks of Miyazaki’s later animation films are already here: the beautiful landscapes, not to mention the impressive architecture. Incidentally, this very first animated film by the later Ghibli Studios founder was a great inspiration for Steven Spielberg’s RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. (av)
