After an introduction by Peter van Beek, chamberlain of Cervantes Maastricht, on the the works of Spanish author Cervantes in film, THE MAN WHO KILLED DON QUIXOTE will be screened, the result of ex-member of Monty Python Terry Gilliam’s notorious efforts to make a film about the legendary Don Quixote.
The Man Who Killed Don Quixote
An advertising executive jumps back and forth in time between 21st century London and 17th century La Mancha in Terry Gilliam’s long-awaited movie version of Cervantes’ legendary Don Quixote.
Toby, a cynical advertising director finds himself trapped in the outrageous delusions of an old Spanish shoe-maker who believes himself to be Don Quixote. In the course of their comic and increasingly surreal adventures, Toby is forced to confront the tragic repercussions of a film he made in his idealistic youth – a film that changed the hopes and dreams of a small Spanish village forever. Can Toby make amends and regain his humanity? Can Don Quixote survive his madness and imminent death? Or will love conquer all?
The characters and Spanish setting are familiar, but this film is directed by the man who brought us BRAZIL and THE FISHER KING – not to mention being a former member of Monty Python – so it’s not surprising that it deviates from the novel. Gilliam went through hell and high water to make this movie (flooded sets, collapsed funding, court battles) and it’s exhilarating to finally see the film on the big screen.

Antes de dar comienzo a la proyección de THE MAN WHO DON QUIXOTE, Peter van Beek, profesor de Español, dará una introducción explicando detalladamente que quiso y que hizo Cervantes escribiendo este libro legendario, y como Guilliam ha sabido descubrir el alma del escritor en su película.
Ningún otro director de cine ha tenido que enfrentar tantas dificultades como el ex Monty Python- Terry Gilliam. Tardó 20 años en acabar su película sobre Don Quijote.
Toby era un estudiante ambicioso e idealista que dirigió su proyecto de fin de estudios en un pueblo español. Hoy día es un director de cine con mucho éxito, pero también muy vanidoso. Cuando después de algunos años vuelve a viajar a España, encuentra de nuevo al anciano que representó el papel de Don Quijote. Pero este anciano se cree todavía Don Quijote y ve en Toby a su fiel seguidor Sancho Panza. Los dos juntos comienzan un extraño viaje y poco a poco Toby se sumerge en un mundo ficticio donde ya no es capaz de distinguir los sueños de la realidad.
