A heart-warming documentary by Petra and Peter Lataster (De Kinderen Van Juf Kiet) about Branche, a six-year-old boy who is new to the Netherlands and experiences the importance of friendship.
Starting new friendships is a matter of trial and error. YOU ARE MY FRIEND follows the energetic six-year-old Branche who just came to the Netherlands from Macedonia with his parents. In the Netherlands, Branche goes to school for the first time. He does not speak the language and does not know anyone. Finding a friend is not that easy. In the class of teacher Kiet, Branche has to hold his own among classmates with whom he does not share a mother language or common background. We follow Branche during his anxious first day of school, and meet him again later as a confident boy in the class of master Wout. Directors Petra and Peter Lataster use their distinctive observational filmmaking methods – without voice-over or interviews and with the story told from the perspective of the children.
