Mikhail Kalatozov made three films with cameraman Sergey Urusevsky: THE CRANES ARE FLYING (1957), LETTER NEVER SENT (1960) and SOY CUBA (1964). At first glance, THE LETTER THAT NEVER SENT appears to be an adventure film in the social realist tradition, but gradually the film takes a different turn. Soviet man proves no match for the unleashed Siberian nature when a huge forest fire forces the foursome to flee for their lives.
