Masterfully filmed love story about a young couple separated during World War II. Winner of the Golden Palm in 1958.

Director Mikhail Kalatozov omits the propaganda and focuses on individual emotions. That makes this film about a tragic love affair during World War II unique within Soviet cinema. His new film language, full of surprising camera positions, prepared the way for young, innovative filmmakers such as Andrei Tarkovsky. THE CRANES ARE FLYING became a classic, thanks in part to the superior photography of cameraman Sergey Urusevsky in the wide Sovscope format. Lumière is screening a digitally restored version of the film.

Michail Kalatozov, Sovjet-Unie, 1957, 95 min. Russian spoken, English subtitles. With Tatyana Samoylova, Aleksey Batalov, Vasiliy Merkurev, Aleksandr Shvorin, Svetlana Kharitonova.
