Asteroid City
Wes Anderson’s (The Grand Budapest Hotel) new film takes us to a convention for junior stargazers and space cadets in an American desert town in 1955.
American director Wes Anderson’s (THE FRENCH DISPATCH, MOONRISE KINGDOM) work has a distinct, ultra-stylised aesthetic. You only need to see a few seconds to know you are watching a Wes Anderson film: he creates a pastel-coloured world, thought out down to the smallest of details. A picture book populated by eccentric characters who, while well-read and intelligent, are also damaged by life. His latest film, ASTEROID CITY, is set in a fictional American town in the desert where a convention is organised for young stargazers and their parents. They have come to Asteroid City from all over the country for comradeship and scientific competition, but their convention is spectacularly disrupted by earth-shattering events.
As with his previous films, Hollywood stars once again lined up to work with Anderson. This time, the cast includes Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, Tom Hanks, Edward Norton, Jeffrey Wright, Adrien Brody, Steve Carell, Matt Dillon, Willem Dafoe, Margot Robbie and Jeff Goldblum. The film had its world premiere in competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
