The Piano - English subtitled
A woman takes control of her own life in this magnificent tale of love, set in New Zealand in the 19th century. Winner of three Oscars and the Palme d’Or at Cannes.
It is 1825. Ada, a young widow who has not spoken since the age of six, has been sent with her daughter Flora to the dark beaches of New Zealand after being married by proxy to a lonely and crude colonialist. He wants to stop her from playing her piano and leaves it to stand in the pouring rain on the beach. Meanwhile, Ada weaves a secret story of love and sex with George, a half-Maori settler played by Harvey Keitel. With a magnificent performance in eloquent silence by Holly Hunter, the film epitomises music’s ability to bring people together.
Upon its release, Jane Campion’s third feature was widely hailed as a cinematic masterpiece. Jane Campion became the first female winner of the Palme d’Or, and sadly remains the only female winner to this day.
