Once Upon A Time In Anatolia - English subtitled
Beautifully shot murder mystery about a group of men who search the deserted steppes of Anatolia at night for the missing body of a murdered man. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes in 2011.
The group includes a police chief, a prosecutor, a doctor and two suspects who both cannot remember where they buried the corpse. As the increasingly frustrating investigation wears on, far more is revealed than where the body is buried; through quick looks, furtive gestures and offhand bits of dialogue, Ceylan reveals in this seemingly pacific Turkish outback a festering world of jealousies and resentments, as the story behind the murder gradually emerges.
The most acclaimed Turkish filmmaker in contemporary cinema – Nuri Bilge Ceylan (UZAK, WINTER SLEEP) – once again does not make things easy for the viewer. His movies are slow, pensive experiences. Patient viewers will however be rewarded with a visually lush and hypnotic quest for the nature of human existence.
This screening is a collaboration with United World College Maastricht. Film students will introduce this film (language: English). Afterwards, there will be a discussion, led by the film teacher.
