Nationale Opera & Ballet: Tosca
Registration of Puccini’s opera Tosca, performed by the Dutch National Opera & Ballet. Love, lust and political intrigue tumble over each other in the life of the spirited singer Floria Tosca.
Australian-German director Barrie Kosky won critical acclaim in 2022 for his wildly exciting staging of Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca. Kosky’s direction emphasises the psychological drama and dark nature of the opera. We follow the fortunes of singer Floria Tosca, who becomes entangled in a dangerous power play when her lover is captured by a sadistic, terrifying police chief. Tosca takes fate into her own hands, with horrifying consequences.
Lumière screens a recording of this riveting performance. The music is provided by the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, the Chorus of the Dutch National Opera and several leading soloists, led by chief conductor Lorenzo Viotti. He signs for a musically ‘unsweetened’ Tosca. He shakes off the performance tradition and goes back to the score with fresh eyes.
