Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger

Documentary on the brilliant oeuvre of the film duo Powell and Pressburger (The Red Shoes, A Matter Of Life And Death), with a wealth of clips and rare archive footage.

Time & Tickets

After fleeing Nazi Germany, Hungarian Emeric Pressburger met Michael Powell in London. It was the start of a unique partnership that produced such classics as THE LIFE AND DEATH OF COLONEL BLIMP (1943), A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH (1946), BLACK NARCISSUS (1946) and THE RED SHOES (1948).

Martin Scorsese first came across Powell and Pressburger’s films when he sat in front of the family TV as a child. When The Archers’ famous logo appeared ‘You knew you were in for real film magic’, Scorsese recalls. Drawing on a rich array of clips and archive material, Scorsese explains how ingenious and daring Powell and Pressburger’s work was, and how this is reflected in his own work. For this documentary, he worked closely with Michael Powell’s wife Thelma Schoonmaker, who also edited several of Scorsese’s own films.

NB: During this period, Lumière is also screening Peeping Tom, the film made by Michael Powell after his year-long collaboration with Emeric Pressburger came to an end in 1957.
