Loveable - English subtitled
Sharp and nuanced divorce drama about a Norwegian couple facing a painful question: where did things go wrong in their relationship?
While Sigmund is always away on business, Maria, mother of four, juggles her career with childcare and managing the home. Like many other relationships, theirs was also all about love and harmony in the early stages, however, after years of married life, the cracks have started to appear. Sigmund is ultimately the one to ask for a divorce, and Maria is forced to confront her greatest fears.
With her feature debut, Lilja Ingolfsdottir examines contemporary ideas of romance, equality within the relationship, and the power of womanhood. What makes Loveable special is the way the break-up is portrayed. The camera remains focused on Maria, never leaving her alone for even a minute. And so we become silent witnesses to her strength and vulnerability, but above all to her struggle. With her surroundings, but especially with herself.
The film had its world premiere at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, where it won awards for Best Actress (Helga Guren) and a Special Prize of the Jury.
