Los Reyes Del Mundo
Colombian drama full of dreamy and surreal images about five teenagers who want to escape the violence and poverty they grew up in. Winner of the Golden Shell, the top prize of the San Sebastian film festival.
LOS REYES DEL MUNDO is the moving tale of the journey of five Medellín street children on the way to their ‘promised land’. Or rather, the piece of land that eighteen-year-old Rá was returned by the government – the land his grandmother had to give up to the paramilitaries. The road trip of Rá, his brother Culebro, and their three young ‘adopted’ friends Sere, Nano and Winny takes them through a ruthless land. Ruthlessly beautiful like the landscape they pass through, but also ruthlessly harsh. However, the kids are on their way to freedom, and that gives them strength.
A hopeful film she wanted to make, Colombian director Laura Mora Ortega, lauded for her debut KILLING JESUS – a film rooted in the violence in her homeland and the violent death of her father. LOS REYES DEL MUNDO outlines the dramatic history of her country and its people. It has become a hopeful film, for sure. It also shows us the beauty that lies in the resilience of people navigating the edges of society and trying to survive. (ej)
