L'Atalante - English subtitled (+ introduction)

Poetic realistic classic about the misadventures of a newly married boatman who takes his bride on his barge.

Time & Tickets

In Jean Vigo’s hands, an unassuming tale of conjugal love becomes an achingly romantic reverie of desire and hope. Jean, a barge captain, marries Juliette, an innocent country girl, and the two climb aboard Jean’s boat, the L’Atalante – otherwise populated by an earthy first mate and a multitude of mangy cats – and embark on their new life together. Both a surprisingly erotic idyll and a clear-eyed meditation on love, L’ATALANTE, Vigo’s only feature-length work, is a film like no other. (source: Criterion)

NB: The film will be introduced by David Deprez, Lumière’s artistic director. In his introduction, he will elaborate on the French poetic realism and playfully connect the film to the art project ‘Dat Wat Blijft’ by Monique Broekman, about the Zuid-Willemsvaart. At the time of the screening, her barge will be docked in the Bassin.
