Sophie is taken on as a maid with the Lelièvre family, that lives in a beautiful but remote mansion. The maid has a secret that the arrogant and self-centred Lelièvres don’t notice. Sophie soon falls under the influence of the mysterious and outspoken Jeanne (Isabelle Huppert), a postal clerk. The bond between the young women becomes stronger and stronger and Sophie no longer automatically accepts the authority of the Lelièvres. The stage is set for a tale of murder, violence and betrayal.
