David Hockney (born 1937) has spent a lifetime innovating himself, using all kinds of techniques throughout his long career in order to translate the three-dimensional human perspective on to a flat surface. He has become the most popular painter today; there is always a major exhibition of his work somewhere in the world. In addition to his own art, Hockney has studied and published about the techniques of the old masters and regularly caused a stir in the art world with his discoveries.

When Dutch painter Pieter Athmer found out that Hockney was going to live in Normandy, his great inspirer – the man who changed the way he looked at his life – was suddenly nearby. He decided to create a special painting for the English artist, hoping to arrange a meeting with his idol. His good friend, director Gerardjan Rijnders, immediately saw an opportunity for a documentary and together they left Amsterdam for Normandy with the painting.

Gerardjan Rijnders, Pieter Athmer & Paul Ruven, Netherlands, 2024, 70 min. Dutch spoken, without subtitles.
