Het Grote Offensief
Through powerful archival footage, The Grand Offensive sheds light on a forgotten chapter of the Second World War: the Allied campaign to secure the Western Scheldt.
As the liberation of the Netherlands appeared within reach, a power struggle emerged within the Allied ranks in the autumn of 1944. General Eisenhower and Field Marshal Montgomery clashed in a battle of egos and conflicting strategies. The decisions made by these two rivals not only influenced the course of the war, but also left lasting scars on the province of Zeeland.
Het Grote Offensief blends documentary and fiction, following the format of the popular Dutch television series Het Verhaal van Nederland. Narrated by Gijs Scholten van Aschat, the film uses authentic archive material to reveal the complex reality of liberation – and the heavy price paid for it.
