Dune: Part Two
In the spectacular second part of the film adaptation of Frank Herbert's famous science fiction novel series, Paul Atreides seeks revenge on those who caused his family’s downfall.
‘This is only the beginning’. Those were the last words in DUNE (2021). In part two, Paul Atreides’ journey continues. We meet Paul in the desert of Arrakis, in the company of the Fremen. Together, they will battle the Harkonnens.
The cast from part one returns, but there are also some new faces, including such resounding names as Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, Léa Seydoux and Christopher Walken. Music is once again by Hans Zimmer.
Director Denis Villeneuve says that where the first part was contemplative, part two is a spectacular war epic with a lot of action scenes, shot in new locations in Budapest, Abu Dhabi, Jordan and Italy. The central themes of Frank Herbert’s series of novels – faith, cultural differences, power, corruption and the effect of violence, poverty and oppression on society – come into sharper focus.
For now, DUNE: PART TWO constitutes the conclusion of Villeneuve’s DUNE series, although the director dreams of a final part based on DUNE MESSIAH. However, he wants to wait a few years before making it so that lead actor Timothée Chalamet is a bit older. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Villeneuve said: ‘I have lived most of my life with DUNE. Being patient is part of the journey.’ (mv)
