De Slag om de Schelde (The Forgotten Battle) - English subtitled
Epic Dutch film about the strategically important 1944 battle between German and Allied soldiers in the province of Zeeland, The Netherlands.
In November 1944 tens of thousands of German soldiers and Allied forces fought against each other in a battle for the Westerschelde, the access road to Antwerp. The harbours of that city were of great strategic importance to both sides. In THE FORGOTTEN BATTLE, three young lives become inextricably connected: a stranded English pilot, a secretary at the town hall of Vlissingen and a young NSB member are forced to make crucial choices that impact both their own freedom and the freedom of others.
It’s remarkable that the battle for the Westerschelde is relatively unknown in Dutch culture. Not only was it decisive in the course of the Second World War, it was also one of the fiercest battles in Western Europe during World War II. At least ten thousand people lost their lives. THE FORGOTTEN BATTLE is one of the most expensive films in Dutch film history and was directed by Matthijs van Heijningen in the spirit of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN and 1917.
