Time & Tickets

We honestly didn't know we were so eagerly waiting for it: a movie about the iconic Mattel doll Barbie. Until the trailer appeared online and the Internet pretty much exploded.

In BARBIE, director Greta Gerwig – who also co-wrote the screenplay with Noah Baumbach – takes us to Barbieland, a place where everything and everyone is perfect. Except if you have an existential crisis. Or if you’re a Ken. In this film, Barbie, played by Margot Robbie, discovers that there is more to life than looking perfect. Leaving behind her familiar world of glamour and luxury, Barbie begins an adventurous journey with self-acceptance as her final destination.

To bring the world of BARBIE to life, Gerwig called on production designer Sarah Greenwood, who has already been nominated six times for an Oscar. A seventh Oscar nomination seems a certainty to us, but even if that doesn’t happen, Greenwood already has at least one accomplishment to her name: a worldwide shortage of pink paint. Gerwig wanted the brightest pink available on the market. Greenwood found the paint at manufacturer Rosco and bought the entire worldwide supply. Down to the last drop, so that every attribute and piece of furniture in Barbie’s house could be painted pink. In any case, we can hardly wait until 19 July, the day when we can finally immerse ourselves in the candy-pink world of BARBIE. (mv)
