Acasă, My Home - English subtitled
Beautiful, prize-winning documentary about a big family living in the countryside, in harmony with nature, that is forced to move to an appartement in nearby Bucharest.
Twenty years ago, Gică Enache made the radical decision to turn his back on Romanian society. He built a cabin in the countryside just outside Bucharest, where he and his wife brought up nine children. Now the government has made ambitious plans for this lush delta region, and social agencies are urging the family to return to the city. Patriarch Gică does not agree at all. Still his family moves to a small rental apartment in the city, where its members, evidently, encounter major problems.
In this beautiful documentary debut by director Radu Ciorniciuc, who has a background in investigative social journalism, the central dilemma is clear: adapting to a new world is hard but returning to a past life is impossible. Food, as such, gets a symbolic meaning: is the family catching or buying fish? After winning the Special Jury Prize for Cinematography at Sundance, ACASA, MY HOME went on to win multiple awards at other international film festivals. Rightly so. (wg)
