Sorda - English subtitled
A moving and sensory drama in which we get to know Hector and Angela, a happy couple. Angela's deafness has never been an obstacle in their relationship, but suddenly becomes one after the birth of their daughter.
Ángela, a deaf woman, and Héctor, her hearing partner, are expecting a child. They are excited about the pregnancy, although they do not yet know whether the baby will be deaf or hearing. Despite both claiming they can handle whatever comes, their underlying concerns are evident. After a complicated and emotionally intense labour, Ángela gives birth to their daughter, but the pair will have to wait a couple of months to learn if the baby is hearing or not. During this time, Héctor struggles to fully grasp the challenges Ángela is facing, while she must come to terms with raising a daughter who may not share her experience of the world.
Director Eva Libertad’s film explores an unprecedented theme in cinema: the relationship between a deaf woman and motherhood. It tells the semi-biographical story of its lead, the deaf actress Miriam Garlo – the director’s sister. The camera deliberately focuses on touches and hand gestures and through the clever use of sound effects, the film not only fosters empathy for people with hearing impairments but also allows the audience to experience their joys and frustrations firsthand. Sorda had its world premiere at the Berlinale, where it won the Panorama Audience Award.
