Three third-generation Indonesian artists delve into their own family history in an attempt to break through the generation-long ‘Indisch Zwijgen (Indonesian silence)’. How do the traumas of the past influence their present lives? How can they, as a third generation, propagate what it means to be Indonesian? The documentary is meant as a starting point for a conversation about a history that until now often remained underexposed.

This documentary shows how the melancholic krontjong music takes the residents of the Rumah Kita nursing home back to their youth in the Dutch East Indies. Many residents of the nursing home once left their homeland, often forced, to build a new existence in the cold and distant Netherlands. Memories that are evoked by the krontjong music are both pleasant as well as more traumatic. The documentary is built around the preparation and performance of a concert by the Dutch krontjong ensemble Abadi in Rumah Kita.
