Central Do Brasil - English subtitled
Moving Brazilian road movie by Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries) about a retired teacher who reluctantly joins a 10-year-old boy on his quest for his father. Winner of the Berlin Golden Bear.
Former schoolteacher Dora earns a living writing letters for the illiterate. She sets up shop every morning in the hall at Rio de Janeiro station. People from all over the country come to see her, some in the hope of contacting lost relatives, others wanting to write a love letter. Dora’s life changes dramatically when a woman for whom she has just written a letter is the victim of a fatal accident. The letter was addressed to her husband, who had left her. She wanted to persuade him to meet her again and be introduced to his nine-year-old son Josué. Reluctantly, Dora joins the boy on a road trip to find his long-missing father.
Salles’ 1998 film has rightly become a classic and is one of the best-attended films of all time in Brazil. It was nominated for two Oscars and received a Golden Globe. More than twenty-five years later, this odyssey has lost none of its magic.
