September 5
Tense thriller about an American news team tasked with reporting live on the hostage-taking of Israeli athletes during the 1972 Munich Olympics.
In September 5, we witness a moment that changed journalism forever. When eleven Israeli athletes are taken hostage by a terrorist group, a team of ABC sports journalists must quickly switch from sports coverage to a 22-hour live broadcast about the hostage-taking, which was watched by an estimated one billion people.
Several documentaries and feature films have already been made about the events during the Munich Olympics, including Steven Spielberg’s Munich (2005). Writer-director Tim Fehlbaum recounts this often-told story from the fresh and absorbing perspective of the team of sports reporters who suddenly found themselves in the eye of the storm. At the centre of the story is Geoff, a young, ambitious TV producer eager to prove himself, who unexpectedly has to take the helm of the live coverage. As conflicting rumours spread and the lives of the hostages are at stake, Geoff faces a host of moral, professional and psychological dilemmas.
